Building a Career or Building a Business? Why You May Not Have to Choose
Our previous article, « Taking Ownership of Your Career », emphasized the importance of continuously developing your skills to unlock better career opportunities and greater professional responsibilities. While this remains valuable advice, many members of our community have asked an equally important question: « Is climbing the corporate ladder the only path to long-term success? »
The answer is no. For many Cameroonians living and working in the Philippines, a different strategy may be just as effective. Instead of pursuing increasingly demanding corporate roles, some professionals intentionally choose stable jobs with manageable responsibilities that provide a reliable income while dedicating their evenings and weekends to building a personal business. This approach, often referred to as « hybrid entrepreneurship », allows individuals to reduce financial risk while gradually creating an additional source of income and, eventually, a long-term asset that they fully own.
This does not mean abandoning personal growth. Whether your goal is a successful corporate career or entrepreneurship, continuous learning remains essential. The skills acquired in the workplace, such as communication, leadership, project management, customer service, finance, negotiation, and problem solving, are equally valuable when running a business. Likewise, entrepreneurial experience develops creativity, resilience, decision making, and financial discipline, qualities that also make someone a stronger employee or manager. The key is understanding that career development and entrepreneurship are not competing philosophies but complementary paths that can reinforce one another.
Ultimately, there is no single definition of success. Some members of our community aspire to become senior executives, specialists, researchers, or leaders in their professions. Others dream of owning businesses that generate financial independence and create opportunities for future generations. Both ambitions are worthy, and neither is superior to the other. What matters is choosing the path that aligns with your personal goals, family responsibilities, financial situation, and long-term vision. Whether you decide to build an exceptional career, create a thriving business, or combine both through a thoughtful hybrid strategy, the most important investment you can make is in yourself. Continuous learning, disciplined execution, and strategic planning will remain the foundation of lasting success wherever your journey leads.
